What to expect
Together with our guide, you’ll go on a hike in beautiful Dovrefjell National Park to search for the musk ox.
There are over 200 musk oxen in Dovrefjell. Our guides are well known in the area, and joining us increases the chances of spotting them. In addition, you’ll learn all there is to know about the muskox – and of course other local wildlife, plants and history. During the hike, our guide talks about how the national park has changed from the last ice age until modern times, and how this has influenced life in the region. With a bit of luck, we might also spot birds of prey, ptarmigan, or reindeer.
To not disturb the musk oxen, we keep a distance of 200 m. Our guide brings a telescope, and it is possible to rent binoculars before the hike. Musk ox are wild animals and move freely in the national park, making it difficult to predict how long each hike will be. Generally speaking, it is a medium demanding trip of 7-15 km, and lasts 5-6 hours. We hike in groups of 2-18 people per guide.

What to bring
Bring some extra warm clothes, as the weather can change fast in the mountains. We advise to wear waterproof hiking shoes, preferably with ankle support. Bring a packed lunch with something to drink, and binoculars if you have them!
Transport
Are you staying in Dombås and don’t have a car? We offer transport from Dombås to our musk ox safari. The minibus leaves at 09:15 from Sentralplassen 1A (on request only, choose “book with transport”). Transportation time back to Dombås is different every day, as it corresponds with our musk ox safari.
We can also offer transport from other accommodations between Dombås and Hjerkinn. Contact us for price and time.
We usually have to drive a bit from the meeting point to where we start hiking. If you are staying at Hjerkinnhus, or at Kongsvold Fjellstue (we pick up guests staying there at ca 10:15) and don’t have a car, you can join our car (free of charge). Simply let us know by leaving a comment with your booking.
NOTE: During the summer season, there is a shuttle bus to Snøheim leaving from the same address at 09:45. Do NOT get on this bus, as it is not connected to our safari. We will not wait for you or refund your booking.
FAQ
Can I bring my dog? - Dogs on a leash are allowed, but it is the owner’s responsibility to make sure the dog is fit enough to join. In some situations, the dog and owner may have to keep a slightly longer distance to the musk ox. Dog waste bags are mandatory.
Do you offer drop-in? - Often it is possible with drop-in, but we recommend making a booking/reservation beforehand, as we can’t guarantee there will still be spots available.
