sustainability

As a nature-based activity company, Dovre & Lesja Aktiv is responsible for ensuring that our guests enjoy nature in a safe and responsible way. Our goal is to achieve this on nature’s and animals’ terms, with as little negative impact on the environment as possible. In this way, we hope to fulfill our vision: that future generations can enjoy the same beautiful nature that we have today. Therefore, we will work actively and ambitiously to realize this, while also creating positive effects in our local community.

Why are we working with sustainability?

We at Dovre & Lesja Aktiv love nature, and our greatest joy is to be able to show our guests the stunning nature around us. Through guiding, we aim to increase knowledge about nature, from the smallest plants to the largest animals, and its importance to the local community, both historically and today. In this way, we hope to increase understanding and respect for nature among our guests.

However, we also see that nature is changing. The thawing permafrost in Dovrefjell, warmer summers, and snowmelt having negative consequences for wild reindeer, musk oxen, and other species in the mountains, are just a few examples of the effects of a warmer climate. This makes us want to work actively to reduce our carbon footprint, so that future generations will also be able to experience our beautiful nature.

Certification

That’s why we’ve now taken the first step by becoming environmentally certified through Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn). Miljøfyrtårn is a Norwegian environmental certification for businesses that want to work systematically with sustainability and reduce their environmental footprint. The certification involves implementing measures for better resource usage, waste management, and eco-friendly operations.

We began this process in January 2024, reporting figures for 2023. In addition, we set goals for what we want to achieve, both in the short and long term. In January 2025, our efforts were approved, and we are now officially certified through Miljøfyrtårn.

Through our environmental work and certification, we hope to inspire our guests, partners, and competitors to focus on sustainability. Curious about what environmental efforts we’re working on? Keep an eye on our website or social media, where we will update you on what we’re up to.

  • Our results for 2024 will be reported here as soon as we have finished the reports. In the meantime, we’d like to share some examples of initiatives we carried out related to our environmental work:

    • Work environment: As a company, we are nothing without our skilled employees, and it’s important that they enjoy their work. Being outdoors as much as we are is, of course, a dream job, but it often comes with a fast pace and individual tasks. That’s why we set aside some evenings for social gatherings, with professional input, good food, and games.

    • Purchases: The local business community works hard to maintain a good offering for the local community. When we needed new equipment, essential for providing the best experience, we purchased locally – for example, snowshoes, poles, and sleeping pads from Fjelltid Folldal.

    • Local community: Hjerkinndagen is an event for the local population, with activities for both young and old. We are proud co-organizers.

    • Emissions: Due to our location, we are largely dependent on car transportation. Therefore, we purchased an electric car to replace our diesel vehicle.

This doesn’t mean we did everything perfectly, and there is always room for improvement. There’s definitely enough to work with in 2025!

  • 2025 has just begun, but several initiatives are already on the agenda.

We are planning, among other things, a physical first aid course and a fire drill, as safety is something we take seriously.

And one thing we are especially looking forward to in 2025 is replacing our diesel-powered 9-seater vehicle with an all-electric one, significantly reducing our emissions. It has already been ordered, and the expected delivery is summer 2025.

We are facing some exciting challenges and look forward to tackling them. We’ll be sure to update you!

We spend a lot of time outdoors and see the impact humans have on plant and animal life. Although we are a small business, we wanted to contribute positively through environmental certification. When we also learned that it could be financially beneficial, the decision was easy.
